PAN stands for Permanent Account Number.

All eligible citizens must apply and get a Permanent Account Number. The Income Tax department can link all transactions of a citizen with the department using PAN. These transactions can be tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, returns of income, specified transactions, correspondence, etc.
