The ESI scheme refers to the Employees' State Insurance Scheme, which is a social security and health insurance program in India. It is managed by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and is governed by the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948.


The primary objective of the ESI scheme is to provide medical and cash benefits to employees working in factories, establishments, and certain specified establishments.


The scheme is applicable to employees earning a salary up to a certain limit, currently set at ₹21,000 per month effective 1st October, 2016.
